On Entering The Cemetery

The dead play an intrinsic role in magic: sprits that come before us are propitiated, or pacted with to produce magical effect. The virtue itself of the Necropolis itself is one that inspires the energy of the dead: including plants, dirts, dusts, or the objects of memory upon the graves of the deceased. What power lies beneath a grave, or inside the sepulcher? Before we can discuss the powers of the cemetery and its hosts, we must first discuss entering and exiting the world of the dead, and the precautions that must be made beforehand.

The person entering the cemetery to collect materials should always pay off the Guardian of the Cemetery gate, as if one was crossing Styx and paying Kharon. Three coins of silver and a pinch of tobacco is customary, although I have also seen one coin of any denomination and a pinch of tobacco given as well. Use your judgment here.

Upon entering the cemetery it is not uncommon to also pay other cemetery keepers. In some cases, it is said that the oldest grave in the cemetery is Cemetery Ruler. I have also heard that it is the first-buried man in the cemetery or the first-buried woman in the cemetery. In other cases, this is the youngest person buried there. I have also heard it to be the oldest person buried there, or the person with the largest tombstone. Sometimes its said to be the third grave on the right or left. Either way these are intended to be paid. It is also not uncommon to go to the main Cross of Souls, a feature largely in catholic cemeteries or big memorial gardens. These are said to house the unnamed souls that are in the cemetery, and therefore are prayed to for any ancestor, or any person, especially if they are not buried in the cemetery, or are not known by name. This is paid with coins and tobacco.

If any materia such as plants, dirts, or memoria taken off graves is taken, this should be paid for with coins or tobacco. Preferably, this is also divined on, to ensure the spirits of these things are willing to lend their virtue.

Finally, when leaving, in some customs it is said one should leave a different way out of the cemetery to dispel spirits form following you. I have also heard that leaving the cemetery backwards, or spinning around three times does the same thing. It is also customary to pay the guardian of the cemetery off again with silver coins or tobacco upon leaving.
