It would only be slightly inaccurate to describe this book as Willie Wonka set in a library.


The library is fantastic and mysterious because it has not yet opened to the public. Access was granted to winners of an essay contest. The winning group of eleven-year-olds is feted and then escorted into the library for a locked room contest. Plot Summary Mr. Lemoncello is a billionaire, who made his fortune from the creation of whacky and creative games, and he couldn’t have done any of it without his local library. Lemoncello’s gratitude to the library of his childhood extends to providing a helpful holographic image of his 1968 librarian, but his modern version also includes changing video screens, touch-screen computers in the reading desks and an Electronic Learning Center as well as floor-to-ceiling bookshelves stretching up three stories. A character in this book compares Mr. Lemoncello to Willy Wonka, and the comparison holds up. It’s a lot like that kind of adventure, only with high-tech gizmos instead of magic, puzzles instead of morality plays, and a less tooth-rotting way to light up children’s imaginations. This is the first book I have read by Chris Grabenstein. 4 stars = Really Good Review Twelve year old Kyle Keeley loves games, and his favorites are created by Mr. Lemoncello, owner of the famous Imagination Factory. When Kyle finds out there will be a lock in at the brand new library, and Mr. Lemoncello is involved, he is determined to be there.


The only thing standing in his way is an essay contest. While they solve riddles and break codes, the kids must also elude storybook characters and work together, even with difficult peers.
